27,500 associates in 84 countries participating in Novartis’ global initiative to demonstrate support for local communities
Dorval, Quebec, April 28, 2016– For the 20th consecutive year, Novartis associates in Canada will be leaving their offices to engage in a variety of volunteer activities benefiting more than twenty five non-profit community organizations in their communities. Activities include gardening, spring cleaning, park and waterfront clean-up, and donating blood. Associates will also be volunteering at food banks, schools, and group homes, as well as collecting food and clothing for those in need.
The effort is part of the company’s global Community Partnership Day, during which Novartis associates around the world do volunteer work in their local communities. This year’s global effort will involve more than 27,500 associates in 84 countries. The day is held to mark the company’s creation in 1996.
“The Novartis Community Partnership Day is an important day of the year for Novartis associates to give back to the local community,” said Timothy Maloney, President of Novartis Pharmaceuticals Canada Inc. “We recognize the importance of volunteer efforts in communities where we live and work and are proud to be running this initiative in Canada for the 20th year.”
Associates from all Novartis divisions (comprised of Novartis Pharmaceuticals Canada Inc., Sandoz Canada Inc. and Alcon Canada Inc.), are participating in Community Partnership Day. Many of these volunteer assignments are coordinated through Volunteer West Island, an organization which has facilitated volunteerism by recruiting, training, and referring volunteers within the community since 1967.
“Volunteer West Island’s Corporate Volunteer Program continues to grow and flourish; events such as Novartis Community Partnership Day illustrate the importance of corporate volunteering for all concerned,” said Kathleen Greenfield, Coordinator of Community Relations for Volunteer West Island. “The volunteer-hours contributed by the Novartis employee-volunteers are of great assistance to non-profit organizations that provide crucial services to the community.”
She added that the community groups are also appreciative of the exposure Novartis Community Partnership Day gives them, “Participation in volunteer activities familiarizes employees with the resources available. Research shows that at some point, one out of five residents will require the help of such a community organization. It’s good to know how to access such services, or where to refer colleagues, friends, or family members when a need arises. Resource facilitation strengthens our community”.
Along with Community Partnership Day, other initiatives of the Novartis global philanthropy effort are its Access to Medicines Program and International Volunteer Program. Locally, Novartis Pharmaceuticals Canada Inc. is proud to support Ride for Life (in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation), United Way, and Partage Action: West Island Community Shares.
